Sensei Bomi Joseph

Sensei Bomi Joseph is the Head & Chief Instructor at USA Kyokushin™ Karate. He discovered Kyokushinkai karate only after he had achieved a black belt in Goju-Ryu karate. In 1976, he was one of Hanshi Steve Arneil’s early students. Hanshi Arneil encouraged him to train with Sosai Mas Oyama, in 1979, at the Kyokushinkai Honbu dojo. His dreams of being an “uchi deshi” under Mas Oyama was rudely thwarted by the considerable influence of his father, who ensured that Sensei Joseph went back to college to further his scholastic education.

In 1984, Sensei Joseph saw Soshu Shigeru Oyama’s dojo in White Plains, NY, and promptly drove in. He trained under Soshu, and other legends of Kyokushin™ Karate in Manhattan, in their glory days, till the September 11th 2001 attack on New York crippled Soshu’s dojo. Sensei Joseph trained with Sensei Hioki in White Plains, NY in 1984, Shihan Kenji Fujiwara in Bethel, CT from 1986 till 1991, Sousui Makoto “The Tank” Nakamura in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan in 1994-1995 and more recently Saiko Shihan Yasuhiko Oyama in Homewood, AL.

Sensei Joseph regularly attended Soshu’s legendary summer camps at Brodie Mountain, MA, and fought in most of the Kyokushin™ and Oyama Karate knockdown tournaments he could attend. His last full contact knockdown tournament was the Fighter’s Cup in San Francisco, CA, in 2018. He placed 4th in the general division, where he fought fighters 30 to 35 years younger than he. He has never fought in the senior division.

Sensei Joseph focusses on the health and spiritual well being of his students. He firmly believes in the generation of maximum output with minimal effort. This is the true essence of consistent and proper training.
